New Gundam Anime Director Teases Evangelion ‘Fan Service’ in Smash-Hit Movie

Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of all four of the Rebuild of Evangelion anime movies, has teased his personal touch in the new Gundam GquuuuuuX film, promising to deliver a familiar feel for fans of the former.

The recently released anime film Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- hosted a Creator’s Talk on Studio Khara’s YouTube channel, featuring director Tsurumaki, mechanical animation designer and chief mechanical animation director Sejoon Kim, and producer Yuki Sugitani. The anime blog Shinseiki translated some of the interview highlights, including an exciting insight into the trio’s experience coming aboard a Gundam project, despite being longtime Evangelion staff members. Notably, Director Tsurumaki teased “fanservice” in GQuuuuuuX for Evangelion fans. Readers can check out his comments below.

After being asked about similarities between GQuuuuuuX and Evangelion‘s world, Tsurumaki agreed with Sugitani that he simply likes that sort of setting, but added, “It practically feels like they share the same setting and world, but it’s actually absolutely nothing like that. It’s really just fan service — or rather, since it’s a production by Studio Khara, I thought I could have had some fun with it.”

“There are some aspects of Gundam that feel pretty stiff and strict, like the pre-determined, ‘official’ setting for instance…” Tsurumaki continued, “but well, since Studio Khara is the one producing it, I thought it was fine if I played around with that a bit.” Other nods to Evangelion included input from GQuuuuuuX mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita, who also co-designed the mechas with Hideaki Anno in the original Evangelion TV series and was chief mechanical designer for the Rebuilds. Tsurumaki told Yamashita not to be “overly influenced by the other Gundams’ designs, to the point the new design line-up wouldn’t feel ‘Yamashita-like’ anymore.” He requested of Yamashita a Gunpla “like nothing I’d ever seen before.” Gquuuuuux Gunpla is already available to pre-order for Hobby Link Japan. Yamashita recently gave an interview highlighting Tsurumaki’s major influence over this latest Gundam entry, stating, “Tsurumaki decides everything. Anno-san might do something to cover for him, but that’s it.”

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Continues to Be a Major Box Office Success

Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX is presently enjoying an extremely successful theatrical run. The film has grossed over 1.43 billion yen (~US$9.3 million) to date, with its run expected to last until at least April, per Japanese theater chain Alex Cinemas. GKIDS recently announced the acquisition of the film’s North American rights, with GquuuuuuX‘s U.S. release date slated for February — barely a month after its Japanese release.

Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX is officially described: “Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space. When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the entry name “Machu,” she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.”
