New launches drive April auto sales – Car News
New car launches boost April auto sales, with top OEMs like Mahindra, Toyota, Kia, and JSW MG Motor reporting strong growth. Mahindra’s SUVs and new EVs led gains, while Maruti held steady. Tata and Hyundai saw declines amid weak buyer sentiment and lack of new models.
New car models which were introduced a few months ago helped the passenger vehicle (PV) industry report a growth in sales in April. However, poor buyer sentiment continued to plague the sector, bringing down new vehicle registrations.
Seven companies controlling 95% of the country’s domestic volumes reported a growth of 5% year-on-year in wholesale volumes to 334,892 units in April. Of this, only two players – Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) and Toyota Kirloskar – recorded double-digit growth among the top five.
Riding high on the Thar, Scorpio and its two new electric vehicles XEV 9e and BE 6, sports utility vehicle (SUV) heavyweight M&M zoomed to the Number 2 spot once again (after February), selling 52,330 units to its dealer partners in April, a growth of 28% y-o-y.
Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, despatched only 1% more vehicles than last year during the month at 138,704 units. Its small cars such as Alto and S-Presso continued to see poor demand.
Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India said, “Despite a challenging market environment and no new model launches, we have managed to maintain our performance, with wholesales of around 142,000 units (including commercial vehicles) which is better than April 2024. Retail sales have also kept pace, reaching approximately 144,000 units.”
Reporting a fall of 6% y-o-y, Mumbai-based Tata Motors despatched 45,199 units to its dealers in the same month. Unlike its rivals, the company did not have any new launches in recent months.
Korean carmaker Hyundai reported the biggest sales decline during the month, slipping to the fourth spot. The company’s despatches fell 12% y-o-y to 44,374 units.
Three other brands – Toyota, Kia and JSW MG Motor – reported double-digit growth in April, bucking the broader trend of the market. The growth came on the back of demand for newer models as well as demand for models which have a strong consumer traction.
Toyota, for instance, saw high demand for the Innova range as the summer months are typically high-volume periods for the multi-seater people movers. In addition, there was demand for the Hyryder model. The company saw a 33% y-o-y growth in wholesales to 24,833 units during April.
For Kia India and JSW MG Motor, demand drivers were their newly launched models like the Syros and Windsor, respectively. While Kia sales grew 18% y-o-y to 23,623 units, sales of JSW MG Motor surged by 23% y-o-y to 5,829 units.
Hardeep Singh Brar, senior vice-president and head of sales and marketing, Kia, said, “We are pleased by the strong start to FY25, underscored by the enduring success of the Sonet and the positive market response for the new Syros.”
