New music shop Picks & Sticks opens in Middlesbrough market

Picks & Sticks, at Middlesbrough’s Dundas Indoor Market. is the brainchild of Aaron Mockett, an engineer-turned-entrepreneur, who aims to support and promote Teesside’s musicians.

After a decade in engineering, Mr Mockett decided it was time for a change.

He said: “I thought it’s time to do something for me now and I think more and more people are thinking that way.”Aaron Mocket Aaron Mocket (Image: Newsmaker PR)

His new venture sells musical instruments such as guitars, basses, drums, and keyboards, and offers instrument repair services.

Mr Mockett encourages customers to bring in their instruments for checks to ensure they’re in top shape.

He said: “It’s all about the personal touch and we can make you sound ten times better.”

Instruments can also receive a makeover from his artist sister, who customises them for improved aesthetics.

For Mr Mockett, music runs in the family.

His father was a professional musician and the 32-year-old himself plays several instruments and performs alongside his brother.

Picks & Sticks started with a humble collection of nine guitars, two basses, and three drum kits, all moved from his home to the market unit at the start of March.

The market, with its all-inclusive set price covering rent, rates, utilities, and internet, provided a cost-effective launching pad for his small business.

Although building his business is a priority, Mr Mockett is also committed to community support.

He is organising a fundraiser for Teesside Hospice, Music Innovation (MI), to be held at The Chapel at Whitehouse Street on May 10.

He said: “It’s close to my heart. Not just mine, but several of the people in our group.

“We’ve all had someone there at one stage in our lives.”

Mr Mockett also aims to inspire a love of music in young people by providing refurbished guitars for local schools.

He is accepting donations for this cause.

He said: “If a kid picks up a guitar we’ve worked on, it’s going to feel good, all the strings will be there and electrics are going to work.”
