A new music venue opens at Carson Creek Ranch this weekend. ConcertDome, a 2400 square foot, 360-degree immersive space for string quartet music, launches its inaugural season May 9.

Built like a smaller version of the Sphere in Las Vegas, the 52-foot-tall custom geodesic dome – located on 701 Dalton, near the airport – projects panoramic animations and seats 105 reclining chairs around its central stage. In its first run of performances, which goes from May 9 to 31, a string quartet will play three, one-hour sets per night on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

ConcertDome founder Tom Yaron, a Denver-based violinist, got the idea for the project after performing with Candlelight Concerts, which plays a mix of classical and popular music throughout the country. He and the company played in a similar dome at EDM festival Lost Lands, and “it was so clear that this was the future of where chamber music needed to go,” he recalls.

“The word chamber music itself means music for a room, and it’s rarely ever played in a room,” Yaron says. “You see it in Carnegie Hall, you’ll see it on a stage. Which is great, but that’s a very 20th century tradition. Mozart, when he was writing his string quartets, was writing for him and his buddies to be staying up all night and drinking and having a great time.”

ConcertDome’s string quartet will perform a series of “hyper-curated” selections throughout the month. The opening night’s theme is “Bad Boys of Country,” featuring the music of Morgan Wallen, Teddy Swims, Jelly Roll, and Chris Stapleton. (On launching the program with the music of controversial figure Wallen, who was seen on camera using the N-word in 2021, Yaron says: “The goal isn’t to be controversial, but the goal is to be inclusive. … Inclusion doesn’t mean always inviting people you agree with.”) Themes on other nights include Beethoven, Taylor Swift, Radiohead, Brat Summer (featuring the music of Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan), and Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar.

“If you look at a lot of these like projection domes, or these experiences that revolve around a thing, around a venue, they have to really rely on selling the features of that venue,” Yaron says. More than the technology component, for ConcertDome, “the hope is to use the string quartet as a love letter to people’s communities and affinities and identities.”

While the arrangements for the performances are written and performed in-house, Yaron says ConcertDome projections come from a “mix” of AI-generated and human-made visuals. He describes the immersive experience as a way to augment the live music performance.

“Because we put music – live, really good quality music – at the center, we feel that it’s a totally warranted use of this kind of technology, because it’s being used to actually augment human art,” Yaron says.

The founder continues, “We’re in a time where a lot of artists are feeling threatened by artificial intelligence, by LLMs – rightfully so. We wanted to try to see if we can use this new technology to, rather than replace humans, create new possibilities to reach new audiences and augment creative potential.”

Tickets to the ConcertDome range from around $40 to $60. See the full schedule here.
