No more lawyer reels? Delhi Bar Council warns against social media fame – Brand Wagon News

The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has issued a stern warning to legal practitioners against promoting themselves on social media and other digital platforms, flagging such actions as unethical and in violation of professional conduct rules, reported Bar and Bench. In a notice dated August 4, the Council said it had observed a rising trend of advocates engaging in “unethical canvassing” by posting promotional material, including interviews and photographs linked to ongoing or concluded cases.

The Council cited Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules, which prohibits lawyers from soliciting work or advertising their services through any means. The BCD cautioned that any breach of this rule amounts to serious professional misconduct and could invite disciplinary action under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961. Punishment may include suspension or even cancellation of the licence to practise law.

Rise of ‘legal influencers’ a growing concern

The Council also raised concern over the proliferation of so-called “legal influencers” on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn. According to the BCD, many of these individuals do not possess valid legal credentials but continue to dispense legal opinions and content on sensitive matters, thereby spreading misinformation and undermining public trust in the legal system.

The notice emphasised that such behaviour not only misleads the public but also tarnishes the image of the legal profession. “Any violation of the aforesaid Rule amounts to serious misconduct,” the BCD reiterated, warning that disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against violators.

Advocates asked to remove all promotional content

In its directive, the BCD ordered all advocates engaged in self-promotional activities online to remove such content from their social media handles immediately. “All such advocates who are active on social media in this regard… may remove their contents or otherwise action shall be initiated on individual cases under Section 35 of the Advocates Act,” the Council stated.
