NOC launches mental health platform for National Sports Festival
The Nigeria Olympic Committee has launched a new safeguarding initiative and mental health platform ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The initiative includes the unveiling of a comprehensive safeguarding handbook and the introduction of SAFE SPACE, a dedicated platform designed to promote athlete welfare, provide psychological support, and strengthen protective measures across Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
The NOC says the move is part of its wider commitment to creating safer sporting environments, in line with International Olympic Committee guidelines that have been in place since 2004.
Developed in collaboration with mental health organisation My Space My Time, the new platform will conduct risk assessments for both athletes and officials during the Games.
Organisers say the insights gathered will inform national safeguarding policies and help create more robust structures for preventing abuse and supporting mental health.
A statement issued by NOC described the safeguarding handbook as a practical resource for sports organisations, coaches and athletes. It outlines ways to prevent harm, identify signs of abuse, and respond effectively to safeguarding concerns.
Copies of the handbook will be distributed to all athletes and officials visiting the SAFE SPACE zone at the festival.
The SAFE SPACE platform will also provide training and expert guidance on safeguarding practices, acting as a central hub for education, advocacy and support.
NOC president Habu Gumel said the initiative marked a major step forward for athlete welfare in Nigeria.
“We believe that sport has the power to transform lives, and it must be a safe and supportive space for athletes to flourish,” Gumel said.
“Our Safeguarding Handbook and SAFE SPACE initiative represent crucial steps towards fostering a culture of care and respect in sports, where athletes can thrive and reach their full potential.
“We invite State Sports Councils, commissions, athletes, and stakeholders to engage with this initiative by visiting the Safe Space Zone, ensuring prioritisation of safeguarding and the protection of athletes.”
The NOC Safeguard Commission is led by Dr Olajide Joseph Adebola, with Femi Abioye, Dr Oluwaseun Nariwoh, Dr Bakare Ummukulthoum, Justina Erezi and Kemi Obidahunsi serving as members.
