Nongspung village seeks Govt help to develop Mawsangri as tourist spot

Shillong, May 21: The dorbar shnong of Nongspung village on Wednesday requested the state government to extend financial assistance for preserving and beautifying Mawsangri, which is known for its natural scenic beauty, making it one of the tourist destinations in the state.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh by a delegation of the village dorbar led by its Acting Sordar Johnworthborn Kharmyndai.

“We kindly request financial assistance to support the following initiatives: funding for infrastructure projects such as construction of a road to the top of the hill to facilitate easy access for tourists and locals alike, trails, signage and viewing areas, building a pond on the hill to create a serene and picturesque spot and creating a viewpoint with a panoramic view of Mawkyrwat areas and Mairang areas,” Kharmyndai said.

He said according to local legend, Mawsangri is believed to be the mother of Kyllang and Symper, two legendary figures in our cultural heritage. This legend has been passed down through generations, and we believe that preserving and promoting this cultural significance can attract tourists and benefit the local community.

“We believe that with proper development and preservation, Mawsangri can become a popular tourist destination, promoting cultural and economic benefits for the local community,” he said.

Highlighting the benefits of such a project, the Acting Sordar said the preservation and beautification of Mawsangri can attract tourists, generate income and create jobs for the local community.

“(It will help in) promotion of local legend and heritage can help preserve the cultural identity of Nongspung Village. Sustainable tourism practices can benefit the local community, promoting economic growth and overall development,” he added.
