North-East Governors Warn Of Looming Flood, Food Crisis
Governors of the North-Eastern states of Nigeria have raised alarm over what they described as imminent humanitarian and economic challenges facing the region, including the threat of flooding and a possible food crisis.
Naija News reports that the warning came in a statement issued at the end of the 12th meeting of the North-East Governors’ Forum held on Saturday in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, said credible climate forecasts signalled that the subregion could face heavy flooding in the coming months.
“The Forum took into cognisance the forecast of credible agencies on climate risk and the impending flood disaster in the subregion. We call for proactive measures to confront the flood and robust sensitisation of settlers along the flood plains,” the statement noted.
The governors urged the Federal Government and the North-East Development Commission to prioritise the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, particularly bridges and roads previously destroyed by floods.
Rising Cost of Farm Inputs Raises Food Security Fears
On agriculture, the governors warned that the escalating cost of fertilisers and other inputs could severely undermine yields in the next farming season.
“Forum decries the high cost of agricultural inputs which might have direct negative consequences on farm outputs next year. To avert an impending food crisis, it calls for more subsidies to farmers and robust preparation for dry season farming,” they said.
The Forum also announced that the North-East Trade Fair would hold in Maiduguri, Borno State, in December 2025, in collaboration with the North-East Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
The fair, according to the communiqué, would boost regional trade and attract investment opportunities to the zone.
Energy challenges also featured prominently at the meeting, with the governors pledging to accelerate measures to address the region’s longstanding power deficit.
“Forum recommits to subduing energy poverty by tasking the Committee on Power and Energy in the subregion to come up with an integrated subregional Power Masterplan,” the communiqué added.
