North Waghi MP backs music festival to uncover local talent
North Waghi MP Benjamin Mul has pledged to host a music festival in his electorate later this year, aiming to showcase hidden musical talent and give young people a platform to shine.
Mr Mul made the announcement during Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations in Banz last week, where he took to the stage alongside Dop Doit Band frontman Tony Banga.
The performance drew loud cheers from fans and set the tone for his promise to invest in music as a driving force for youth engagement.
He said many young musicians in North Waghi had been hiding their talents but proved their ability when they stepped up during the anniversary celebrations.
“This shows there are so many youths who want to perform and promote music not only in North Waghi, but in Jiwaka Province as a whole,” Mr Mul said.
The MP said the proposed festival would bring together musicians across the district, giving them the chance to showcase their work publicly, build confidence, and market themselves.
“Music is another avenue that promotes our young people. It must not be overlooked, it must be encouraged so they can grow and even take their talents beyond Jiwaka,” he said.
Mr Mul also paid tribute to the popular Dop Doit Band, praising their role in putting Jiwaka on the national music map. He described frontman Tony Banga as an inspiration whose songs had topped charts and flown the Jiwaka flag high.
“Young people must follow Tony Banga’s example,” Mr Mul said. “One day he won’t always be there to perform, but his legacy will remain. The next generation must be ready to take his place.”
While the commitment to the festival has been welcomed by musicians and fans alike, Mr Mul did not reveal an exact date for when it will take place.
