Nosferatu Director Addresses Labyrinth Reboot Rumors After Announcing Next Film
Robert Eggers is sticking with monster movies for his next project following the success of Nosferatu. After the news was announced, Eggers addressed why a Labyrinth movie won’t be his next film as was recently rumored.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Eggers was teaming back up with Focus Features to direct Werwulf, a werewolf story. Meanwhile, he was also asked by ComicBook about the rumors that he was setting up a Labyrinth film. Eggers did not outright deny the rumors, nothing that he has a “ton of things in development.” This might even suggest that there’s some truth to the reports, but that the reboot is just one of multiple potential projects Eggers has his sights on. The director then clarified that, after Nosferatu, he wanted to tell an “original” story for his next film.

As Eggers explained, “The thing is, I always have a ton of things in development because you need to to survive this industry and you don’t know what is going to hit next. But I definitely want the next film I make to be an original movie.”

Jim Henson directed the original Labyrinth, which was released in 1986. Featuring puppets made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the fantasy film starred David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Toby Froud, Shelley Thompson, and Christopher Malcolm. It tells the story of a teenage girl (Connelly) who journeys into a mystical maze to save her younger brother from the Goblin King (Bowie). The performances of the original stars has played a part in making fans feel leery about a new movie getting made, with the late Bowie seen as irreplaceable.

Jim Henson Has Been Celebrated as a Genius
Labyrinth has long had a strong cult following, but the film was never rebooted or given any movie sequels, making it a standalone film. However, there have been multiple efforts made in recent years to revisit Labyrinth, though every one so far has fizzled out in development hell. Last year, Brian Henson confirmed that there were still plans to make a “sequel” to Labyrinth, but that progress was moving along very slowly. It remains unclear if the reported potential film by Eggers would serve as a sequel or if it would be more of a reimagining of the first installment.
“All those practical, wonderful puppets working together on those beautifully crafted sets,” Connelly told Variety last year about her memories of working on the movie. “It feels different than the way we make a lot of films now; it feels kind of special… Jim was a genius. And we don’t really make movies like that anymore.”
Nosferatu is now available on digital, while Labyrinth is streaming on Paramount+.
