Not A Gentleman! Habitat Owner Balraj Ghai’s ‘Ukhaad Diya’ Tweet On Kangana Ranaut’s Mumbai Office Demolition Goes Viral

An old tweet of Balraj Singh Ghai, the owner of The Habitat Cafe in Khar, Mumbai, has gone viral on social media after the venue was vandalised by Shiv Sena workers over comedian Kunal Kamra’s standup set on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In the old tweet, Ghai seemingly mocked the demolition of Kangana Ranaut’s office in Mumbai back in 2020.

In 2020, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) tore down parts of Kangana’s office in the city, and back then, Ghai had reacted to it by posting, “Ukhaad diya”. As his own cafe was recently vandalised by Sena and was later torn down by BMC workers, netizens reminded of his old post, and called it an instance of ‘karma’.

“Karma has its own way of striking back (sic),” a user replied to his old tweet on X, while another wrote, “Karma never misses an address! (sic).”

Netizens also took a dig at Ghai’s ‘gentleman’ tag that was given to him on the controversial show, India’s Got Latent, hosted by Samay Raina. Unlike other judges in the panel who used a lot of expletives, Ghai was seen comforting the contestants and boosting their spirits by asking the audience to applaud for them.

“Balraj bhai bahut bura lag rha tha pehle Habitat ke liye..lekin ab nhi. Balraj is not a gentleman (sic),” a netizen commented.

After the massive uproar of Kamra’s parody song calling Eknath Shinde ‘gaddar’, Shiv Sena workers stormed inside The Habitat and vandalised the venue as it was where Kamra had performed the set. Later, the owners of The Habitat issued an official statement, announcing that they have decided to shut the place down.

“We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us. Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices. We have never been involved in the content performed by any Artist, but the recent events have made us rethink about how we get blamed and targeted every time almost like we are a proxy for the performer,” the statement read.

“We are shutting down till we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy,” it added.

Meanwhile, Kamra has refused to apologise for the song, citing his right to free speech as per the Constitution. On Tuesday, he also shared another satirical song, titled ‘Hum Honge Kangaal’, showing the aftermatch of the Sena vandalism at The Habitat.
