O-R Athlete of the Week: Owen Ivcic, Bentworth
Name: Owen Ivcic
School: Bentworth
Grade: Junior
Sport: Wrestling
Ivcic’s week: A day after winning the 160-pound WPIAL Class 2A wrestling championship, Ivcic was working in one of the barns of the family farm.
He certainly showed some of that farm strength at WPIALs over the weekend.
Ivcic won his first WPIAL title with a 10-2 decision over Frazier’s Ryan Celaschi in the championship match, but it was his semifinal bout that will be talked about for years.
The math was not in Ivcic’s favor going into the third period against Neighborhood Academy’s Chaney Lewis, Jr. He was down 12-6, but scored nine points in the final 90 seconds to pull off a comeback and win 15-14.
“I knew I had to score,” Ivcic said. “I took him down once. He didn’t come up all the way, the ref gave an escape, so I went around him and took him down at the end again to win by one. I knew I just needed a takedown at the end to win.”
The adrenaline was pumping after the semifinals, but Ivcic was able to collect himself prior to the final and ended up with a much less dramatic championship match.
“Just talking with my coaches, they told me that it’s wrestling and matches like that are going to happen,” Ivcic said. “I was just able to refocus and go out and perform in the finals.”
To celebrate the win, Ivcic and his family went to Texas Roadhouse and he got a well-earned steak dinner.
Breakout season: Ivcic had strong freshman and sophomore campaigns, but his junior year has been even better. He’s 43-3 this season heading into this weekend’s regional at Altoona. The top seven wrestlers in each weight class at regionals advance to the PIAA Championships. Ivcic surpassed the 100-win mark earlier this season and is 118-31 in his career.
“All summer I just put in the work to advance my game to that level,” Ivcic said. “I just worked on my game all-around, but especially on my feet and being able to take people down to score a lot of points.”
Farm life: The Ivcic family have a lot of traditional farm animals on their farm, but some unique ones as well. They raise sheep, goats, pigs, horses and donkeys and mini cattle. Some of the more exotic animals include wildebeest, camels, zebras, yaks and antelopes.
“They’re cool to have,” Ivcic said. “The yaks are very personable. They are cool animals.”
The lessons growing up on a farm have helped shape him in his athletics.
“It taught me as a young kid that you have to work for everything,” Ivcic said. Nothing is free and nothing is handed to you.”
Working the Fair: One of the reasons for having some unique animals in their stable is that the Ivcics operate the petting zoo at the Washington County Fair. This year’s Fair is August 9-16.
“Some nights there get a little hectic running that,” Ivcic said. “There’s always a lot of people there. It helps with my people skills.”
