To mark the International Olympic Day, the Department of Sports and Physical Education and the Myanmar Traditional Lethwei Federation held the Federation Cup Mixed Gym Traditional Myanmar Lethwei (Myanmar’s boxing) Championship yesterday in Yangon.
The competition featured 14 bouts, fought under the format of three rounds of three-minute fights with two-minute breaks. Eight fights resulted in victories while the rest ended in draws or no decisions.
Dr Tin Aung Lwin, President of the Myanmar Traditional Lethwei Federation, along with executive members and Lethwei enthusiasts attended the event. Winning athletes were awarded trophies and cash prizes.
The purpose of the Championship is to promote emerging athletes, highlight the essence of traditional Myanmar Lethwei, and provide opportunities for those who have never entered the ring before — whether for fun or out of passion. To support this aim, first priority was given to boxers with no previous fights, followed by those with one or two fights.
Participating gyms earn three points for a win and one point for a draw. At the final match in December, the gym with the highest total score throughout the year will be awarded the Federation Cup. — Arkar Linn/KZL
