Oman affirms commitment to elderly rights at high-level UN meeting
NEW YORK : This affirmation was delivered by Ambassador Maisa bint Zahran Al Ruqaishi, a member of Oman’s Permanent Delegation to the United Nations, during a high-level meeting on ageing held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
She highlighted the country’s alignment with global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing. She further stated that the Sultanate is continuing to strengthen legislative and institutional framework to support the elderly, ensuring they live in a secure, inclusive, and supportive environment. She pointed to national efforts focused on integrating older individuals into society and providing them with holistic care in line with regional and international best practices.
Among the steps taken, Oman has developed a comprehensive social protection system, approved financial aid packages for seniors, introduced regulations for foster care, and provided assistive devices. The country has also established specialized daycare centres that cater to both psychological and social needs.
Ambassador Al Ruqaishi further noted the issuance of guidelines for home care services and the implementation of age-friendly urban planning standards. She underscored the importance of initiatives such as cultural and social activities in various governorates, which aim to enhance elderly participation in public life, along with national dialogues designed to shape policies rooted in human rights principles.
She stressed the importance of aligning national policies with the Arab Strategy for Older Persons and adhering to relevant international conventions, in order to enhance regional and international cooperation.
She called for accelerating efforts to draft a binding international instrument to protect and promote the rights of older persons, ensuring their dignity and well-being. She affirmed the Sultanate of Oman’s full support for the outcomes of the meeting and its readiness to cooperate with member states, United Nations agencies, and all partners to build a more just and inclusive future for all age groups.
