OpenAI could slash ChatGPT Plus price in India by 85%, Reliance may help: Report | Artificial Intelligence News

OpenAI is reportedly in talks with Reliance to offer ChatGPT at a much lower price in India—possibly as low as ₹300/month. The discussions also include selling API access and hosting AI models locally in Jamnagar. Meta is also exploring similar partnerships but is trailing behind in user traction.

OpenAI might soon offer a cheaper ChatGPT subscription for Indian users, with reports suggesting a potential price cut of up to 85%. The Sam Altman-led company is said to be in serious discussions with Reliance Industries for a broader AI partnership in the country.

According to a report by The Information, the two companies have held multiple talks, exploring how Reliance Jio could distribute ChatGPT and bring OpenAI’s language models to Indian businesses.

ChatGPT at ₹300/month? OpenAI exploring massive discount

OpenAI currently charges $20 (₹1,740 approx) for ChatGPT Plus globally. But for India, the company is reportedly considering slashing that price to just ₹300–₹435 per month, based on the 75–85% cut discussed in the report. That move could bring millions of new users onboard, especially in India, which is already OpenAI’s second-largest market.

A person familiar with the company’s internal roadmap said OpenAI aims to reach “1 billion daily active users by the end of this year.” India could play a massive role in that.

Reliance to offer OpenAI API, run models from Jamnagar?

Reliance is reportedly looking at more than just reselling ChatGPT. Talks have also revolved around Reliance offering OpenAI’s AI models to enterprise clients via APIs. This would, however, need Microsoft’s approval, since Microsoft holds the exclusive resale rights for OpenAI’s tech.

The Mukesh Ambani-led group has also pitched its upcoming 3-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, as a possible host for OpenAI’s and even Meta’s models. If finalised, this could mean local hosting of ChatGPT models—boosting performance and helping keep Indian user data within the country.

Meta also in the mix, but struggling with traction

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is also reportedly in early talks with Reliance to build AI solutions in India. While it once invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, its own Meta AI chatbot has struggled to gain Indian users.

Similarweb data cited by The Information showed Meta’s standalone AI web app draws “very few Indian visitors” compared to OpenAI.

Meta had also discussed licensing its Horizon VR software to Jio, and in 2023, reports suggested it might build a data center on Reliance’s Chennai campus.

AI race heating up in India

India’s AI market is expected to hit $17 billion by 2027. With growing local demand and rising competition—especially from China’s DeepSeek—OpenAI’s push to expand in India appears well-timed.

The report notes that Ambani’s Reliance has already partnered with Nvidia to build AI infra, and the company has plans to launch Indian ChatGPT-like tools soon.

For now, talks between Reliance, OpenAI, and Meta are still ongoing. But if these deals go through, it could drastically reshape AI access and infrastructure in the world’s most populous country.
