Orlando Bloom Gives a Hopeful Update on the Return of Legolas in the Next Lord of the Rings Movie
Orlando Bloom’s film career kicked off with the first Lord of the Rings movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, back in 2001. As Legolas, Bloom’s Elven character was one of the nine members of the Fellowship who set out to destroy the One Ring.
Fans are now gearing up for the next installment in The Lord of the Rings film franchise, Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Per The Independent, in an interview with ITV’s This Morning, Bloom has revealed he’d “hate to see anyone else” play his iconic Legolas character in the new movie.
Bloom portrayed the elf in all three of Peter Jackson’s original films. He then reprised his role in Jackson’s Hobbit prequel series in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
When prompted with the question of whether he’d return to Middle-earth, Bloom replied, “I don’t know. I promise you, listen, if Legolas is a part of that, whatever chapter they’re doing, then I would hope that I’d get the call, because I’d hate to see anyone else do it.”
Bloom revealed that he didn’t know a lot of details regarding The Hunt for Gollum. “But I really don’t know what the story is. I know it’s a Gollum story, so it’s possible,” Bloom said of how Legolas would fit in the movie’s timeline. “Of course (I’d jump at it). I wouldn’t want anyone else to do it,” Bloom continued.
The Hunt for Gollum is slated for a Dec. 17, 2027, theatrical release. It is being written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. The movie will take place after Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party and prior to the Mines of Moria, so Legolas could technically show up in the movie at some point. However, there have been no casting announcements regarding Bloom reprising the role.
Bloom expressed interest in returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise in April 2025. During a panel at Washington, D.C.’s AwesomeCon hosted by ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeiser, Bloom said, “It was a beautiful time (making the Lord of the Rings movies), but this idea of kind of going back is like, ‘Absolutely, who wouldn’t want to go back to that place?”

Serkis is set to not only direct The Hunt for Gollum, but he will be reprising his role as the titular Gollum/Smeagol character. Two other Lord of the Rings alums are also confirmed to be in the cast. Both Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will be reprising their respective roles as Gandalf and Frodo Baggins in The Hunt for Gollum.
“I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum,” said McKellen at the For the Love of Fantasy event in London. “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed,” McKellen teased.
The Lord of the Rings films are streaming on HBO Max. The Hunt for Gollum is set for a Dec. 17, 2027, release.
