Over 4,000 scientists call on UN and Israel to halt human-made Gaza crisis
More than 4,000 scientists from around the world have appealed to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the artificial shortage of food as unbearable and warning that the denial of healthcare, education, and basic necessities has reached alarming levels.
The appeal, which includes 14 Nobel laureates, five Fields Medal winners, 20 Breakthrough Prize recipients, 34 Dirac Prize winners, and four Wolf Prize recipients, emphasises the urgency of international intervention to prevent further suffering.
Signatories of the appeal, which include renowned physicists and mathematicians such as Gerard ‘t Hooft, David Politzer, Roger Penrose, Takaaki Kajita, and Giorgio Parisi, expressed shock at the enforced lack of medical services, the destruction of civil infrastructure, including universities, and the apparent disregard for the rights and well-being of civilians in Gaza.
They highlighted the famine-like conditions resulting from food shortages, while also condemning the recent attacks by Hamas and calling for the immediate release of hostages held by the group.
The scientists stressed that the broader historical and political context, including previous acts of violence and loss of life, cannot justify the current humanitarian emergency, which demands immediate action.
They urged the Government of Israel and all relevant international institutions to take urgent measures to halt the ongoing crisis, emphasising that the protection of civilian life and access to essential services should remain a global priority.
By combining scientific authority with moral concern, the letter represents a rare and significant international call for humanitarian intervention, drawing attention to the worsening conditions in Gaza and the urgent need for coordinated global action to prevent further loss of life.
