Pakistan Allocates 2,000MW for Bitcoin Mining and AI Data Centres in Digital Push | Tech News
Tech News
Pakistan has allocated 2,000 megawatts of electricity to power bitcoin mining and AI data centres in a bid to monetise surplus energy and attract foreign investment. The initiative, led by the Pakistan Crypto Council, aims to create high-tech jobs and boost digital infrastructure.
This marks a major step in Pakistan’s strategy to become a regional hub for digital innovation.
New Delhi: Pakistan plans to use 2,000 megawatts (MW) of its extra power to support bitcoin mining and AI data centres. This is the first part of a national plan to make Pakistan a key digital centre in the region. The government is working with the Finance Ministry and the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC) to encourage foreign investment, create jobs in high technology and make a profit from unused energy assets, according to Bloomberg.
This move is made after Pakistan decided to support cryptocurrency use in the country to help the economy and bring in more revenue. Muhammad Aurangzeb, the finance minister, said this marked a significant step forward for the country’s digital progress. The PCC wants to guide the initiative to turn unused energy infrastructure into a lucrative, innovative part of the industry.
Digital drive backed by energy strategy
High rates and surplus energy production have long been a challenge for Pakistan’s energy sector. Because so many people are now turning to solar energy, the problem of overcapacity has become more serious. Sending surplus power to data centres in need can help the country turn a problem into a long-term benefit.
Bilal Bin Saqib, CEO of PCC, stated that users who need consistent power, such as bitcoin miners and AI, are great choices for the overproduction. He mentioned that having appropriate regulations would enable Pakistan to take a leading place in global digital asset manufacturing and data infrastructure.
Global interest and geopolitical edge
The Finance Division reports that since Pakistan is situated between Asia, Europe and the Middle East, it is a natural choice for handling a lot of international data. The recent arrival of the Africa-2 cable on the continent has improved Internet connectivity and increased bandwidth. Several international companies have already shown interest, and more are expected to visit soon. The country is also working on creating a national crypto wallet so it can receive bitcoin from the government.
Jobs, investment, and the path forward
It is expected that many new jobs in engineering, IT and data sciences will soon be created with the opening of these centres. Setting up these centres locally allows dealing with data independence and enhances the country’s capabilities in cybersecurity and cloud technology. Because there are over 40 million crypto users in Pakistan, the country is ready to guide the region in adopting Web3.
Future plans involve using wind, solar and hydropower to power the centres. In addition, the Pakistan government wants to encourage more investment in AI and blockchain by offering tax reductions and duty relief, Dawn reported.
