Palm Beach pair’s $250K challenge grant at PB Symphony matched

A challenge grant of $250,000 created by a Palm Beach couple to benefit music education in underserved county schools has been matched and exceeded, Palm Beach Symphony officials said this week.

Paul and Karen Levy offered the grant in April to assist music education in five Title I schools in Palm Beach County, the orchestra said.

“Karen and I love music,” Paul Levy said in a prepared statement. “The idea that we can help young children get access to it, learn it, participate in it and make music is one that’s very exciting to us.”

The Palm Beach Symphony provides music education to the Title I schools, which have a high percentage of low-income students, through private lessons and coaching from its musicians; complimentary tickets for the orchestra’s concerts; side-by-side performances with musicians in the orchestra; and student ensemble performances at Palm Beach Symphony events, among other things.

“I am thrilled to share that we not only met but exceeded the generous $250,000 matching challenge grant from Paul and Karen Levy,” orchestra CEO David McClymont said in a prepared statement May 28. “This incredible show of support will directly impact schools across Palm Beach County by providing vital music education resources and opportunities for students who need them most.”

The orchestra’s educational initiatives in 2024 included 221 instructional contact hours, 105 specialized instrumental coaching sessions with 183 school classes, and numerous residencies at various county schools. The orchestra’s instrumental donation program has, since 2016, given 880 instruments and more than 1,400 accessories to promising young county musicians.

“We want to grow music education, empower students and ignite a lifelong journey in music,” McClymont said. “And with the community’s help in exceeding this matching grant we can continue to do just that.”
