Paraguay GAA To Face Argentine Rivals In Historic First Gaelic Football Match In Paraguay!

In a landmark moment for Gaelic football in South America, Paraguay will host its first-ever recorded match in this Irish sport on May 24. The historical event, set to take place in the Republic of Luque, just outside of Asunción, is a thrilling international game between Paraguay GAA – this country’s first Gaelic football club – and Cuenca de la Plata from Argentina!

A full day of fun for the whole family is planned, from the pre-game excitement at Luque Rugby Club, through to a night out with the teams.

Paraguay GAA’s founder and president, Thai-born Mozz Suraphot, eagerly anticipates the match, starting early afternoon on May 24, against the established Gaelic football club from Buenos Aires. “It’s an amazing feeling to be part of history.”

Gaelic football is a traditional Irish sport combining elements of football (soccer), rugby, and basketball, played with a round ball. On a rectangular field, players can kick, punch, or carry the ball to score points or goals. Points are scored by kicking or punching the ball over the crossbar between the goalposts (worth 1 point), while goals are scored by sending the ball under the crossbar into the net (worth 3 points).

Mozz (32), despite never visiting Ireland in his life, has been deeply engaged in Gaelic football culture for over a decade through his home club in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital. Paraguay GAA, playing on pitches across Asunción and Luque, unite foreigners and Paraguayans in intensive weekly training sessions.

“Within a week of moving to Paraguay in July 2024, I started the club,” Mozz says. “I invited people to come play, and we have been growing ever since. Now is the first time we’re going to play a real match.”

Making history at Luque Rugby Club

On May 24, Mozz and his team will warmly welcome Cuenca de la Plata at Luque Rugby Club. However, once the whistle blows, prestige will be on the line! The Argentinian opponents will feature a dynamic mix of Argentine players and Irish expatriates based in Buenos Aires. Four clubs are contributing players for this international event: San Ysidro, Bulfin, GAA CASI, and Lombarden Colegio.

“Some will drive, others will arrive in Asunción by plane or bus. Like our team, they come from diverse backgrounds, united by their passion for the game.”

The Asunción Times proudly sponsors this historic match and invites everyone to cheer on Paraguay GAA in their pursuit of international glory. Following the pre-game excitement, the game will consist of four 15-minute quarters interspersed with brief breaks, followed by the trophy presentation to the victorious team.

You can play!

After what Mozz and his team hope will be a triumphant victory, they will guide you and fellow sports enthusiasts through the finer points of Gaelic football. This event is open to all – young, old, experienced, and first-timers.

“After our big game, some of the team members will give a short clinic and practice session, before a casual game. Allowing newcomers to experience Gaelic football firsthand. We advise people to bring cleats, as the grass may be wet. But don’t feel nervous! We will teach you the basics and we will have fun together.”

Party with the players

Everyone who comes to support Paraguay GAA at Luque Rugby Club, is invited to join both teams for an unforgettable reception party at the iconic Gran Hotel del Paraguay! Celebrate with players and fans, and become part of history.
