Patrick Mahomes reveals stance on playing flag football in 2028 Olympics

Patrick Mahomes has decided on whether he’ll play flag football at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was asked about being part of the Olympic team in three years.

“I’ll probably leave that to the younger guys,” Mahomes said to reporters, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. When the 2028 Olympics arrive, Mahomes will be 32 years old. He’ll he’ll still be playing at a high level for the Chiefs, but it’s likely a younger quarterback could be considered over the three-time Super Bowl champion.

But what Mahomes told reporters on Thursday is a little different from what he said in 2023. “I definitely want to,” Mahomes said to reporters in Frankfurt in 2023, per Olympics.com. “NFL football, American football, has taken to further parts, all the way across the world, with flag football coming to the Olympics. I think it’s really cool because football is a great game that has given me so much, and I want to make sure everyone gets the same experience that I got growing up.”

Patrick Mahomes added, “I’ve seen some of those guys play flag football, and they’re a little faster than I am. I know there’s not, like, linemen blocking for you. I’ll be 31, 32 years old, so if I can still move around then, I’m going to try to get out there and throw the football around, maybe in LA.”

Flag football was approved by the International Olympic Committee to be part of the Olympics in October 2023. On May 20 of this year, the NFL announced its players would be allowed to play in the Olympics.

“It’s an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release. “I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. We are thrilled that they will now have that chance.”
