Paul Feig Says Jason Statham & Melissa McCarthy Action Movie ‘Spy’ Will Not Get a Sequel

and costarring Melissa McCarthy. Even 10 years after its release, the film is a constant chart-topper on various streaming platforms, but despite the success of the movie, and the world’s endless supply of love for Statham’s brand of brash, bald, brutality – even in a comedic setting – it seems that Feig doesn’t see a sequel happening.

While many movies have been riding the wave of nostalgic legacy sequels, it seems that, despite currently promoting his new movie, Another Simple Favor, Feig doesn’t consider himself much of a “sequel chaser.” Speaking with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, the director said of a possible reunion with Statham and McCarthy:

“I don’t know. I mean, of all my movies, that’s probably the one that would make most sense to do another one of. I’m not a big sequel chaser, you know, even though we just did one, I love doing original stuff, and it takes so long to make a movie. The Housemaid was so much fun because I never worked with that cast before, and that book was so different, and the genre is much darker than I normally do, and there’s something great about that. So, if anything, part of me avoids sequels, just because I don’t want it to take me away from something that might be new and exciting.”

Written and directed by Feig, Spy stars Statham alongside Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, and Bobby Cannavale, and follows a CIA analyst who finds herself swapping her desk job to go undercover into a dangerous world of arms dealers. The film became one of the highest-rated entries in Feig, Statham, and McCarthy’s careers with a hugely impressive 95% rating from critics and a 78% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, so it is not surprising that Feig recognizes that it could potentially be an obvious choice for a sequel.

However, it seems that the director is much more interested in telling new stories rather than retreading old ones, so fans of Spy will just have to make do with catching the film on one of the various streaming platforms it frequents. For those who have not had the pleasure of the movie, here is the synopsis to whet your appetite to hunt it down.

“Despite having solid field training, CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) has spent her entire career as a desk jockey, working hand-in-hand with dashing agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece, Susan is the guardian angel who helps Bradley avoid danger. However, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan wrangles her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and avenge Bradley.”
