PDCSU discusses sustainable development | MorungExpress

The Phek District Co-operative Societies Union (PDCSU) held its General Session on August 30 at CBCC Pioneer’s Complex, Pfutsero, under the theme “Sustainable Development.”

During the session, the PDCSU resolved to work towards sustainable practices, economic resilience and social progress through co-operatives.

The general session reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to building stronger, people-centered co-operative societies under the guiding principle of working together for sustainable development.
Addressing the session, Kedoutsolhi Wetsah, president Nagaland State Cooperative Union (NSCU) encouraged all the Registered Cooperative Societies, chairman & secretary to play a vital role in socio-economic development in the rural area.

Stating that the year 2025 being the International Cooperative Day Celebration under the theme “Driving inclusive and sustainable solution for a better world,” Wetsah urged upon the PDCSU to be the champion, support people centered and sustainable development.

He said that the NSCU, Dimapur was started in 1967 as an apex state level non Trading Cooperative Education Training and Organization representing the entire Nagaland cooperative movement under the sponsorship of the State Co-operation.

The NSCU was established to impart new basic co-operative education, training and information to members and Board of Directors.

The NSCU aim to promote and develop the cooperative movement in the state, to educate guide and assist the people in their efforts to build up and expand the cooperative sectors and to serve as an exponent of cooperative opinion in accordance with basic cooperative principles.

It also aim to impart cooperative education, training and information to the cooperative and to act as cooperating agency on all matters- pertaining to cooperative education, training and information as per the 5th principle of cooperation, to develop inter cooperative relationship and help in coordinate functioning of the cooperative movement in various sectors.

Wetsah stated that cooperative education, training and information became pre-requisite base for the success and growth of co-operatives.

“In view of changing economic environment constant review of cooperatives education and training is a must to make all sectors of Cooperatives more efficient and effective to complete with private sectors,” he said.

Cooperative movement in Nagaland
Wetsah said that cooperative movement in Nagaland was initially started with the establishment of two cooperative Kohima Pioneer MPCS Ltd, at Kohima and Ao Trading Cooperative Society Ltd at Mokokchung in 1964.

He said that the real effort for organizing the cooperative movement in the state started only after Nagaland attained statehood in the year 1963 and thereafter, the office was fully established in the year 1966 by bifurcating from Agriculture Department. He said that Cooperation Department had 8877 Registered Cooperatives Societies as per 2024-2025 records.

According to the Ministry database, 8084 Registered the Cooperative Societies uploaded to the National Cooperative database.

So far, 231 has been computerization of Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS) with a target to digitize and a new PACS is under the process.

With NABARD as implementing agency, the bank and cooperative department, Govt. of Nagaland as State holders has successfully computerized 231 PACS Societies.

The next phase of PACS is under process of evaluation  and collection of data of the PACS to be board, he said.

NCDC, ICDP scheme
Wetsah said that the state of Nagaland under the category of Cooperative least developed state started implementation of the NCDC Scheme for primary cooperative societies from the year 1987 onwards. Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) first phase started in Nagaland during 1989 which is an NCDC sponsored scheme.

Phek District also availed ICDP first phase, however till today, some societies are yet to recover loan both for NCDC & ICDP Scheme, Wetsah said.

He said that the second phase of ICDP Scheme was started in the year 2018 till 2022. At present there is no more both NCDC & ICDP project in Nagaland.

“I am happy to learn that the Minister of Cooperation Govt. of Nagaland is taking initiative for implementing of NCDC Scheme in Nagaland with the rest of North East India very soon,” he said.

‘Work together to foster collective growth and resilience’
PDCSU president Kekhwengulo Lea stressed that co-operative societies work together to foster collective growth and resilience.

Marlong T, ARCS i/c SRCS Pfutsero also urged the cooperative societies to work hard and recognize each other’s   strengths.

He also highlighted the ongoing PACS computerization initiative and shared insights on loan facilities available to co-operatives.

The session also announced the new team of PDCSU for the tenure 2025-2030. The new team will be led by Vekhoneyi Venuh as president. Other office bearers includes; Vice president-Mutsicho Sazo, General Secretary-Mesetsozu Wezah, Joint Secretary Wekotso-u Kapfo, Finance Secretary-Chuvi Lea, Treasurer-Lhiwekhape Wetsah, Publicity &information Secretary-Tavelhü Medeo. Legal advisors-Wekhrope Marhu and Vekhotso Swuro. Advisory Board Members-Kekhwengulo Lea, Khosapa Venuh & Kedoutsolhi Wetsah.

Vechulou Kanuo pronounced special prayer for the newly elected team
The session, hosted by Chakhesang Women MPCS Ltd, was chaired by Vekhoneyi Venuh while welcome address was delivered by Wekotso-ü Kapfo, Secretary, Chakhesang Women MPCS Ltd.
The session concluded with vote of thanks by PDCSU vice president Rieletho Ngouri.
