Peru was elected in Paris to preside over the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions of

. Peru’s Permanent Representative to the organization, Ambassador Carlos Herrera, will lead this session in February 2026.

The Peruvian Presidency will aim to strengthen international cooperation for the development of cultural and creative industries, ensure equitable access to culture, and promote policies that safeguard the diversity of artistic expressions in the face of growing global challenges, objectives shared by all State Parties to the Convention.

The 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee will provide an opportunity to continue efforts to adopt measures that reinforce the implementation of the Convention.

Key priority topics under discussion include regulating the digital environment to protect cultural expressions, improving access to funding for cultural projects in developing countries, and fostering international cooperation to address globalization’s impact on local cultural production.

The election of Ambassador Herrera solidifies Peru’s role as a key player in the international cultural agenda.

In recent years, the South American country has spearheaded initiatives to promote its creative industries, safeguard tangible and intangible heritage, and strengthen cultural policies as a tool for inclusive development.
