Peru lifts duties on 90% of Indonesian imports

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Trade has announced that 90.68 percent, or around 7,257 categories of Indonesian goods, can now enter Peru tariff-free under the Indonesia-Peru Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Director general of international trade negotiations at the ministry, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, said that the products benefiting from the import tariff exemption include motor vehicles, footwear, textiles, palm oil and its derivatives, manufactured goods, and household appliances.

“In quantitative terms, we will receive preferences for more than 90 percent of tariff lines in Peru. Conversely, Peru will also receive similar treatment from Indonesia,” he informed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Indonesia-Peru CEPA prioritizes ten key commodities.

They comprise passenger cars and other motor vehicles; footwear made from rubber, plastic, or leather; textiles; palm oil; refrigerators and freezers; heat pumps; paper and cardboard for graphic purposes; margarine and processed animal, vegetable, or microbial fats and oils; cloves; as well as printing machines and multifunction printers.

According to Witjaksono, the zero tariff will be implemented in stages, with motor vehicles, footwear, textiles, palm oil, and cooling products getting priority.

“Some will take effect upon the agreement’s entry into force, others in the second year, and the rest in the third year. However, almost all will eventually receive zero tariffs,” he informed.
