Tony Finau has joined Rory McIlroy in advocating for the PGA Tour to host more golf tournaments in the North East of the United States.

Currently competing at Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia Cricket Club for the Truist Championship, the golfers are pleased with the course, which is receiving rave reviews. Meanwhile, McIlroy is set to return to a tournament he hasn’t played at in 11 years.

Typically held at Quail Hollow, this year’s event shifted locations due to the PGA Championship scheduled there next week. This change has prompted discussion among players about exploring other venues in the region.

Finau commented on the need for the PGA Tour to consider the wealth of high-quality courses nearby following his third-round play on Saturday. He mentioned chatting about it with fellow golfers, stating: “Yeah we were talking out there with Harris (English).

“I played with Harris English today and (Max) Homa yesterday, we were talking about it. Within a 100, 150-mile radius of this place, I think it’s some of the best golf in the world so I’d love to see the Tour make a lot more stops here and this is definitely a good one.”

McIlroy, who’s had success in the area, also chimed in about the appeal of golf in the North East, particularly around Philadelphia, noting: “Look, Philadelphia is one of the best places in the U.S. for golf. There’s so many great courses around here.

“We’ve got-we’re playing the PGA at Aronimink next year. We’re playing the U.S. Open in ’30 at Merion. There’s a lot of great golf in this area. It’s a beautiful spot. I feel like we don’t play enough tournaments in the North East.”

Despite the PGA Tour only regularly visiting the North East and New England for the Travelers Championship in Connecticut and the occasional major, Justin Thomas expressed some regret for not having played more in the region after being so taken with the Philadelphia course.

He further commented: “I’m honestly kind of bummed that I hadn’t played here beforehand because I selfishly would have tried to go play Merion while I was here.

“But I feel like it’s in my best interest and my job to play the golf course that I’m playing this week. But there really are just so many courses in the North East.”

McIlroy has returned to singles action for the first time since his Masters triumph last month, revealing: “It’s the best day of my golfing life and I’m very proud of myself, proud of never giving up.

“I’m proud of how I kept coming back and dusting myself off and not letting the disappointments get to me. It’s a dream come true.

“I have dreamt about this moment for as long as I can remember. This feels incredible. It’s my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time.

“I think the last 10 years of coming here with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulders, it weighed on me and I’m sort of wondering what we’re going to talk about going into next year’s Masters! I’m absolutely honored and thrilled, and so proud to be able to call myself a Masters champion.”
