PHOTOS: Freezing for free sport, Special Olympics Kelowna takes the plunge

Special Olympics Kelowna froze their butts off on Mar. 2 to raise funds for the organization that provides free sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

About 100 people gathered at Hot Sands Beach for the 2:30 p.m. polar plunge.

Events Coordinator Nicole Smith braved Okanagan Lake with the athletes.

“The athletes had to create pledge pages and get donations from family, friends, and everyone in the community,” Smith said of the fundraising component. “We had some businesses as well that created pledge pages.”

One of the businesses was Valley First’s Guisichan branch. Jessica Vidal and Kylaina Dermedy came out to represent Valley First and present a cheque for $100.

“My niece is actually a part of Team Littles,” Vidal said when asked why they chose to donate to the sport organization. Both women opted out of plunging this year due to being pregnant. They hope to include more branches in their fundraising efforts next year.

The plunge raised over $8,000 for Special Olympics Kelowna.

“Kelowna is one of the only cities that has allowed free sport for our athletes,” Smith noted about the organization. “There’s no weekly fees for our athletes, they can register and participate without spending a ton of money… For people with disabilities, there’s not a ton of money they get supported with, so this is a great opportunity for our committee and the community of Kelowna to be able to provide those sports for free.”

Smith said over 200 athletes were registered for the winter season and they currently have over 150 registered for spring and summer.
