PM lauds Bihar’s sports push, sets sights on 2036 Olympics | Patna News

Patna: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Bihar for its efforts in promoting sports and developing sports infrastructure across the state.
Declaring the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2025 open via a video message to athletes and guests at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, the PM said India was striving to host the 2036 Olympics. He added that Bihar, under chief minister Nitish Kumar, was actively implementing the Centre’s sports-related schemes.
The PM praised Nitish for investing in sports infrastructure and highlighted key initiatives such as the upcoming sports city on the Patna-Gaya highway and the recently opened Rajgir Sports Academy in Nalanda.
“Jo jitna khelega, woh utna khilega (The more you play, the more you bloom),” Modi said in his message to the young athletes participating in the KIYG in Bihar.
Modi also mentioned 14-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking performance in the ongoing IPL and encouraged players to enjoy Bihar’s traditional delicacies, including litti-chokha and makhana, during their stay.
“Sports is being developed in India as a culture, which will also increase the country’s soft power. The Centre has allocated Rs 4,000 crore for sports in this year’s budget. Around 1,000 Khelo India Centres are operational, including over three dozen in Bihar, as the govt remains focused on modernising sports infrastructure nationwide,” he added.
Welcoming athletes from all 36 states and Union territories, Nitish said the Bihar govt had provided govt jobs to 3,067 athletes who had won medals at national and international levels.
He also commended PM Modi and the Union govt for supporting Bihar in the development of sports infrastructure. “Now, players winning medals are given govt jobs. Bihar is also receiving substantial support from the Centre in the areas of roads, industry, tourism and flood control. I thank PM Modi for all of this,” Nitish said.
Reiterating his political stance, Nitish added, “I will never leave the NDA again.”
Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Bihar was changing under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. “The state is establishing its presence at national and international levels. India must maintain its position among the top five sporting nations,” Mandaviya added.
