PM Modi calls Northeast India ‘Ashta Lakshmi,’ highlights region’s eightfold wealth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the Northeast as a vital source of India’s prosperity, calling the region “Ashta Lakshmi” — symbolizing eight forms of wealth and abundance. Speaking at a major event focused on the development of the Northeast, Modi emphasised the area’s rich diversity and vast economic potential.

“India is the world’s most diverse nation, and the Northeast is the most diverse part of the country,” Modi said, underlining the region’s unique cultural, natural, and economic strengths.

He highlighted several key sectors that define the Northeast’s identity and growth trajectory: “The Northeast means tea production, petroleum, sports and skills, emerging ecotourism hubs, and energy powerhouses.” Modi pointed to the region’s vast natural resources and talented population as drivers of future progress.

“This diversity is our strength,” Modi asserted. “That is why the Northeast is Ashta Lakshmi for us — a source of eightfold prosperity that fuels India’s growth and development.”

Modi’s remarks come after India’s corporate giants Reliance Industries and Adani Group announced massive new investment commitments for the Northeast, signalling a bold push to transform the region into an economic growth engine. Together, the two conglomerates pledged Rs 75,000 cr and Rs 50,000 cr respectively at the Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025.
