New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday. The two leaders shared a friendly embrace, marking the start of a two-day state visit to India by the Qatar Amir.

Following this PM Modi tweeted “Went to the airport to welcome my brother, Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Wishing him a fruitful stay in India and looking forward to our meeting tomorrow.”

This visit holds significant diplomatic importance as the two leaders aim to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations. The Amir’s visit is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior ministers, officials, and a business group, highlighting the importance of this state trip.

On February 18, Tuesday, the Amir of Qatar will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, where he is expected to engage in discussions with India’s President, Droupadi Murmu. The President will also host a banquet in the Amir’s honour.

The visit will provide an opportunity for the Amir and PM Modi to discuss a wide range of topics related to India-Qatar relations. These talks are expected to cover trade, investment, energy, technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, further solidifying the multifaceted partnership between the two nations.

Strengthening bilateral relations

India and Qatar share long-standing historical ties built on friendship, trust, and mutual respect. In recent years, the relationship between the two countries has seen significant growth, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. One of the key aspects of this partnership is the large Indian expatriate community in Qatar, which forms the country’s largest foreign group. India-Qatar joint business forum

Parallel to the diplomatic discussions, the India-Qatar Joint Business Forum, taking place in New Delhi on February 18, 2025, aims to further strengthen economic and trade relations. Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), this event will bring together top policymakers, business leaders, and industry stakeholders from both countries.

Key participants, including Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, will deliver keynote addresses. The forum will focus on strategic areas such as logistics, advanced manufacturing, food security, innovation, and AI, fostering long-term business partnerships.

The forum will feature three panel discussions that explore various avenues for collaboration, including investment as a driver for building strategic partnerships between India and Qatar. There will also be talks on leveraging competencies in logistics, food security, and manufacturing, along with discussions on futuristic sectors like AI, sustainability, and innovation.

India and Qatar already share strong economic ties, with significant investments in sectors like technology, infrastructure, and manufacturing. Qatari firms have made notable investments in India’s infrastructure projects, while Indian companies maintain a significant presence in Qatar.

The discussions will spotlight areas aligned with India’s national initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Key sectors for future investment include logistics, ports, airports, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and space technology. The forum also highlights the importance of fostering innovation-driven partnerships through initiatives like the India-Qatar Startup Bridge, which focuses on AI, fintech, and deep-tech collaborations.
