Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently joined Lex Fridman on his popular podcast, discussing multiple topics including India’s role in artificial intelligence and the global AI landscape. In an insightful conversation, Modi asserted that AI cannot progress without India’s involvement, highlighting the country’s vast talent pool and technological advancements.

During the podcast, PM Modi shared India’s vision for AI and how the country is actively shaping its future in the field. He also touched upon the contributions of Indian-origin tech leaders in the U.S. and emphasized the importance of collaboration in AI development.

‘AI Will Remain Incomplete Without India’

When Fridman asked how India could become a leader in AI despite lagging behind the U.S., PM Modi responded with a bold statement:

“No matter what the world does with AI, it will remain incomplete without India. I’m making this statement very responsibly.”

He explained that AI development is a collaborative effort and that no country can single-handedly dominate it. PM Modi pointed out that while India has been perceived as behind in AI, the nation is actively working on real-world applications and making AI resources more accessible to the public.

“India isn’t just developing theoretical AI models. It is actively working on and bringing to life AI-driven applications for very specific use cases to ensure that GPU access is available to every section of society,” he added.

India’s 5G Success and AI Parallels

PM Modi also drew parallels between AI and India’s rapid 5G rollout, stating that while many initially believed India was lagging, the country quickly became the fastest to roll out a comprehensive 5G network.

“Recently, an American company executive visited me and shared his experiences about this very fact. He told me that if I were to advertise in the US for engineers, I would only receive enough applicants to fill a single room at best. But if I do the same in India, even a football field wouldn’t be enough to hold them.”

He stressed that India’s real strength lies in its human capital. “Artificial intelligence is fundamentally powered, shaped, and guided by human intelligence. Without genuine human intelligence, AI can’t thrive or progress sustainably, and that real intelligence exists abundantly in India’s youth and talent pool,” PM Modi said.

‘AI Won’t Replace Humans’

Addressing concerns about AI replacing human jobs, PM Modi dismissed the idea that technology would ever fully replace human intelligence.

“It’s true that in every era, a competitive atmosphere was created between technology and humanity. But every time, as technology advanced, humans adapted and stayed a step ahead.”

He argued that AI is pushing humans to reflect on their creativity and purpose. “I firmly believe that no technology can ever replace the boundless creativity and imagination of the human mind.”

Fridman agreed, adding that human qualities like imagination, creativity, and emotional intelligence set people apart from machines.

In closing, PM Modi posed a rhetorical question: “Humans have an innate ability to care for each other, the natural tendency to be concerned about one another. Now, can someone tell me, is AI capable of this?”
