Port of Cape Town most improved worldwide
The World Bank’s latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) names the Port of Cape Town as the single biggest improver in the world.

The CPPI measures total vessel time in port across 403 container terminals and links gains to practical reforms such as longer crane operating hours, better crane deployment and stronger digital links between customs and logistics partners.
The World Bank says these measures, together with targeted investment, underpinned Cape Town’s rise in the index.

‘Even amid the multiple shocks, developing country ports are finding ways to adapt, improve and maximize value,’ said Nicolas Peltier-Thiberge, Global Director for Transport at the World Bank.
Local operational data point to concrete improvements that match the index.
Transnet Port Terminals has accelerated delivery of critical equipment and rolled out landside changes to reduce truck and vessel delays.
While the Cape Town Container Terminal recorded strong year-on-year growth in refrigerated container throughout, signalling improved reliability for fruit exporters.
According to the Western Cape Government, industry analysts say these moves make the terminal more dependable for time-sensitive cargo.
Port users welcomed the news but urged sustained focus on maintenance, staffing and supply-chain coordination to lock in the gains.
Economists say a consistently efficient Cape Town port would strengthen regional trade and support job creation across the Western Cape.
The World Bank report offers a practical benchmark for tracking whether recent reforms translate into long-term resilience for South Africa’s ports.
