Poverty In North Made Me Employ 1,000 Northerners – Amaechi
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that he ordered the employment of 1,000 northerners during his time in office under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, made the disclosure while speaking at an event in Abuja.
He said his directive was aimed at addressing the alarming poverty and unemployment rates in the northern region of Nigeria.

He explained that his decision came after he discovered a regional imbalance in the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), where southerners reportedly dominated the workforce.

“When I became Minister of Transportation, the South-South and South-East had the highest number of employees in NIMASA,” Amaechi said. “I called the DG of NIMASA and asked him to employ 1,000 northerners. I took northerners to China.”
He added that his initiatives were driven by a desire to ease economic hardship in the North.
“I built the University of Transport in Daura; I did those things because I knew poverty was a problem, unemployment was a problem.”
The comment has sparked debate online, with many questioning the fairness of such a regional employment directive in a federal agency meant to serve all parts of the country equally.
