Powassan summer soccer kicks off with record 141 kids

With cheers from parents and laughter from children, Powassan’s starter league began its summer run this week, setting a new participation record.

Powassan’s Summer Soccer session started on Tuesday evening and had 141 kids participating in the program.

“This is a record-breaking number for our soccer program! spokeswoman Kathie Hogan told BayToday. “Every child had a parent or two, and some had grandparents and other siblings in attendance as well, so it was a very busy night in town. The soccer field has our new playground in the adjacent field, and it was very well used that night by older and younger siblings.”

It offers soccer for two age groups – 4-6 year olds and 7-9 year olds.

“It is just a starter league, so parents can get an idea if their child is going to enjoy soccer,” explains Hogan.  “And the best part about the program is that it gets families out enjoying the evening and cheering on the kids.  There were plenty of happy faces that night.

“We are so thankful to Jared Dupuis, owner of Maple Hill Health and Fitness, for sponsoring the teams, and to Steph Wilson from Complete Landscaping for providing the snacks.  Special mention goes to the many parent volunteers who manage the teams and the kids- we could not run the program without their help.”

The soccer program runs from May 27 to July 15.
