Project Marilyn founder highlights period poverty affecting Nevada women and schoolgirls

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Project Marilyn, a local nonprofit, held a period packing party on Sunday to address a significant gap in donations.

While community members often donate clothes and food, organizers noted that feminine care supplies are among the least donated items.

“We are a non-profit in the State of Nevada that works on a cause known as Period Poverty,” says founder Wendi Schweigart.

According to Schweigart, “2 and 5 women can’t afford period supplies every year do to lack of income. 1 and 4 girls are missing school every month for the length of her period. So what we do here is make a period kit.”

She says each of those kits has enough supplies that will last the duration of the cycle, and that those kits are distributed through partners and agencies.
