Promotion of tourist destinations underway in Koshi

By Baburam Karki,Barahakshetra, June 3: Tourist activity has started picking up in Koshi Province, which is rich in natural beauty and potential travel destinations, after the announcement of the Tourism Year 2082 (2025/2026).

Under the slogan “Beautiful Koshi”, various promotional campaigns are being carried out to attract more tourists.

According to the Koshi Province Ministry of Tourism, promotion of tourist sites is a major focus during the ongoing Tourism Year.

The province has launched various awareness programmes aimed at identifying, selecting and informing about tourist destinations.

Basudev Baral, a member of the Koshi Province Tourism Year Steering Committee, said that promotion efforts have been intensified. “Preparations for the Visit Year are underway. During the Tourism Year, obstacles related to policies, rules and regulations that trouble domestic and foreign tourists will be addressed,” said Baral.

He added that lobbying is ongoing to raise the limit for Indian tourists, who currently are allowed to bring only IRs. 25,000 into Nepal, to around Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 600,000 during the Visit Year. To address complaints of unlawful fee collection from Indian vehicles en route, a sticker system has been implemented. Vehicles with official stickers are now exempted from such charges.

So far, a total of 82 tourist destinations have been identified in the province. Authorities are currently working to rank these destinations into first, second and third priority categories. With its rich religious, historical and natural appeal, procedural discussions are now undergoing to determine which areas should receive top priority for promotion.

Since the implementation of federalism, the Koshi Provincial Government has prioritised tourism development. Preparations for the Visit Year are being made in line with the policies and programmes of the Fiscal Year 2081/82 (2024/25).

The Ministry of Tourism, Forest and Environment, which is responsible for the tourism sector in the province, has been engaged in drafting tourism-related laws, standards and plans, as well as developing infrastructure, regulating the tourism sector, managing tourist police and renewing the license of service providers.

The ministry oversees operations across the province’s 14 districts through the Tourism Development Project and tourism offices in Dharan and Kakarbhitta.

The province’s natural, religious, cultural, geographical and biological diversity, along with its proximity to India, makes Koshi an ideal and promising destination for Indian tourists.

In recent years, efforts have intensified to attract more internal and external tourists by investing in development, beautification and infrastructure, with the broader goal of using tourism as a pillar for economic growth.

Krishna Sah, Co-Coordinator of the Koshi Province Tourism Year Steering Committee, said the campaign aims to utilise these diverse opportunities to uplift the living standards of the locals and contribute to the provincial and national economy.

The operational guidelines for Koshi Province Tourism Year 2082 have been approved and a series of initiatives will be carried out in collaboration with federal, provincial and local governments, as well as the private sector.

To make the Tourism Year successful, the committee has developed a number of action plans. These include organising festivals and events, promoting cultural and religious treks and encouraging sports and adventure tourism.

The committee is also focusing on online and social media publicity, along with the production and distribution of promotional materials.

Inter-provincial and cross-border tourism activities are part of the strategy as well. “It also includes experience-sharing programmes with private stakeholders, tourist safety management and rural tourism promotion,” Sah added.
