PSC discusses with UAAP, NCAA the adoption of Olympics sports in calendar

The Philippine Sports Commission have gone deep into discussions with officials of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the possibility of adding Olympic sports events in their calendar.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio has asked the assistance of the UAAP on the inclusion of boxing, gymnastics, weightlifting and golf in their list of events.

Gregorio has met with NCAA officials on Tuesday for their support as well.

“What is important for me is that the UAAP adopts the program of the UAAP (on Olympic sports) and campaign for this,” said Gregorio, following his chat with UP’s Office of Athletic and Sports Development chief Bo Perasol on Monday.

Adamson University is expected to benefit from the inclusion of gymnastics in the UAAP, since Eldrew and Yza Yulo, younger siblings of two-time Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, are its scholars.

The NCAA, through Season 101 host Mapua University, has convened the managing committee on Tuesday, and met with Gregorio on what disciplines can be added.

“What they have to understand is that before you become an elite athlete, kailangan, we nurture the grassroots’ program. The UAAP schools and the NCAA schools can really help nurture the grassroots program,” said Gregorio.

Gregorio earlier went to Quezon Province and met with local officials on the possible Olympic sports that they can adopt.

Officials of Quezon province, according to Gregorio, are also trying to determine which sports disciplines can be supported and have the interest of their constituents.
