Punjab women protest in Delhi, accuse AAP of breaking Rs 1000 monthly aid promise
New Delhi: On Saturday, a group of women from Punjab gathered in Delhi to protest against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leadership, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal. The protestors alleged that the party failed to deliver on its promise of providing Rs 1000 monthly financial assistance to every woman in Punjab, a key commitment made during the state assembly elections.
One of the protestors, hailing from Punjab’s Gurdaspur, told ANI, “We have come from Punjab’s Gurdaspur. People there are poor. They (Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann) promised to give Rs 1000 to every woman. They formed the government by lying.”

Adding to the controversy, the protestors criticized the recent launch of the ‘Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojana’ in Delhi, under which AAP aims to provide Rs 2,100 per month to women residents of the national capital. The scheme was announced by Arvind Kejriwal on December 22, ahead of the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, expected in February 2025.
The protest comes at a critical time for AAP, which won a landslide victory in the 2020 Delhi elections, securing 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP won eight seats. The Congress, once a dominant force in Delhi, has failed to win a single seat in the past two assembly elections.
With the Election Commission of India yet to announce the official dates for the Delhi elections, the AAP government faces increasing scrutiny over its ability to deliver on promises both in Punjab and Delhi. | PTI
