Puppy love: This international airport in India has launched a therapy dog programme for travellers

Travellers passing through Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad may now be welcomed by more than just flight announcements and security checks. Yes, passengers will get to pet friendly Toy Poodles that have joined the airport’s team as part of a newly-launched Therapy Dog Programme, aimed at reducing travel-related stress and bringing a touch of warmth to the airport experience.

The initiative, introduced by GMR Group which operates the airport, seeks to enhance passenger wellbeing through soothing interactions with trained therapy animals. According to RGIA officials, the presence of dogs is believed to help ease anxiety, uplift spirits, and would bring a more peaceful atmosphere within the busy terminals.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Passengers have appreciated the calming presence of the dogs. The initiative has been well-received as a thoughtful and comforting addition to the airport experience,” an unnamed airport official was quoted as saying by PTI.

Currently, the programme includes four certified therapy Toy Poodles, each accompanied by professional handlers trained to ensure both animal and passenger safety. The handlers are responsible for monitoring interactions and managing unforeseen situations, guaranteeing a secure and relaxing environment for all involved.

The report added that the pets are stationed at select domestic and international departure zones from Friday to Monday between 3 pm and 7 pm. They are available only to those passengers who willingly approach them, minimising potential stress or discomfort for those who may prefer to avoid animal contact.

One traveller, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their experience, saying, “I was so happy to see them. It already feels like I’m beginning to heal. A truly wonderful initiative. Please keep up the amazing work. And a special thanks to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for helping fund and facilitate this incredible effort.”

The programme is currently in its pilot phase, with RGIA indicating that any future expansion will be guided by passenger feedback and logistical considerations.

Nearly 30 million passengers passed through the airport in the last financial year, RGIA is now moving to incorporate emotional wellbeing into the travel experience, which seems a more people-centric airport service.
