Quentin Tarantino Hailed This Three-Time Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker as the Best Director Besides Him
Quentin Tarantino has famously discussed how he plans to retire from directing after his 10th project. That is among the reasons why he chose not to direct the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel and let the “best director” do the job.
In a new appearance on The Church of Tarantino podcast, via Deadline, the two-time Oscar-winning director explained why he passed the duty to director David Fincher. The sequel, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, brings back Brad Pitt in the titular role and will feature a Se7en reunion with Fincher.
Explaining why he chose not to direct the sequel to the Oscar-winning film, Tarantino explained that it’s all because of the confidence he has in Fincher. “I’ve got the best world, I’ve got Brad, I’ve got my favorite director, David Fincher, directing it. And I like the idea of David Fincher… I like the idea of any great, big director adapting my work,” he explained around the 26:15 mark.
He doubled down on the same comments around the 28:30 mark, noting that, “I think David Fincher is the best director,” he reiterated. “I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors,” Tarantino started. “So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account.“
The filmmaker will, however, write the script. He confirmed the film has already started production. Although the episode came out, it was recorded a while ago and the director said around the 6:09 mark that the film “starts shooting on Monday,” and that “we’ve been in rehearsal for the last two weeks.”

After 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the filmmaker furhter expanded the universe by writing a tie-in novel, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: The Novel, and teased that the character’s story could continue with more novels or movies.
Tarantino explained that, after his film The Movie Critic was scrapped, he went back to Cliff Booth. “If I’m going to go back to that world, everyone really likes Cliff Booth,” he said around the 23:20 mark. “And I love Cliff Both and he seems like he could be the star of a series of paperbacks, you know? So it was like another adventure with him would be different, and I think that’s what everybody wants. The audience want that, and I think Brad wants it, and I work with him in another great role. And so I wrote the Cliff Booth movie.”
The Adventures of Cliff Booth also stars Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Corey Fogelmanis and JB Tadena. There are few details about the plot, except that it takes place in 1977, eight years after the events of the 2019 masterpiece. It’s unclear whether Leonardo DiCaprio will make an appearance as Rick Dalton.
