Black Bear Pictures’ new film, Wicker, has become a major hit upon arrival, outperforming its initial expectations. With the movie becoming a box office success, it’s going to have its theatrical presence substantially expanded this weekend.

Per ScreenRant, Wicker will be expanded to 2,300 theaters in North America starting with its second weekend. That’s 829 additional locations compared to the 1,471 theaters that were screening Wicker for its theatrical premiere. It has also been announced that the movie’s 4DX run will be expanded due to the high turnout seen for its opening weekend. That’s the highest expansion for a Black Bear film released in the U.S. so far, putting it far past films like Christy, In the Grey, and The Rivals of Amziah King.

Wicker Becomes a Box Office Hit With a Low Budget

Wicker was developed with a budget of around $10 million, and it opened with nearly $6 million. With its theatrical expansion, it’s now being estimated that the movie will make around $25 million in the U.S. alone. It will be released in the UK on Oct. 30, followed by an Australian release on Nov. 5. If the North American run continues to perform strongly in theaters, it may be all profit that Wicker will make from its screening in other territories.

Word of mouth and stellar reviews likely played a major part in increasing the turnout for Wicker. The film holds a Certified Fresh score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, earning nearly unanimous praise. The audience score is almost just as high at 92%. Some critics are even predicting that Wicker will be a strong contender when it comes time for awards season next year. It has even been described as a film that has already become a fantasy cult classic.

Wicker Has a Unique Premise

“Wicker is a movie that feels and looks like nothing else, and it has a hook that embeds itself in the viewer and doesn’t let go,” CBR’s own Fawzia Khan said about the feature. “Its cast is utterly invested in its bizarreness, and so the film does the hard parts already. It is now up to audiences who show up on Halloween to determine whether Wicker gets a midnight slot of its own.”

Compared to Edward Scissorhands, Wicker was written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. Taking inspiration from Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story, The Wicker Husband, the feature film follows a lonely fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) living in a seaside village. She asks a basketmaker to create a husband for her out of wicker, and the result is a lifelike man (Alexander Skarsgård). The unconventional romance that blossoms between the two sparks upheaval throughout the village.

The movie also stars Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Nabhaan Rizwan, and Mali Siu.

Wicker is playing in movie theaters.
