Ecija has strengthened its competition law department by appointing Rafael Piqueras as new partner in its Madrid office. Piqueras transits from Deloitte Legal España, where he was the director of competition and EU law, matters in which he has significant international experience.
The new Ecija partner has advised companies across multiple sectors on merger control, foreign investments, anticompetitive practices, cartels, distribution agreements, abuse of dominant position, state aid, litigation, and damage claims, as well as the design and implementation of compliance programs in competition law. With more than 18 years of experience, Rafael has participated in high-profile national and international competition cases, working in multijurisdictional teams and advising clients across various industries, including regulated sectors such as technology, energy, food, and pharmaceuticals.

Before joining Deloitte Legal in 2018, Piqueras worked at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for 12 years in the antitrust, competition, and trade practice. He holds a Law degree from Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI-ICADE, a master’s in Business Legal Advice from IE Law School, and a specialization in EU Competition Law from King’s College London. Rafael has also developed a strong academic profile, teaching at prestigious universities and postgraduate programs.
Additionally, he is an active member of the specialized legal community, serving as a Board Member of the Spanish Association for the Defense of Competition (AEDC) and, since 2022, as a Non-Governmental Advisor (NGA) for the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) in the International Competition Network (ICN).
Alejandro Touriño, managing partner at Ecija, stated: “The addition of Rafael Piqueras to reinforce the competition area in Madrid marks another step in our strategic commitment to multidisciplinary growth. His extensive experience in Competition Law and international expertise strengthen our advisory capabilities in an increasingly regulated and globalized environment. This appointment, aligned with our expansion strategy, will allow us to enhance our value proposition for clients in Spain and Latin America.”
For his part, Rafael Piqueras commented: “I join Ecija with great enthusiasm, convinced that, together with the outstanding group of professionals at the firm, we will achieve great milestones. It is an honor for me to take on the challenge of driving the competition law practice and contributing to Ecija’s ambitious national and international growth plan.”
With this new addition, the Spanish law firm now has more than 220 partners and over 1,400 professionals in its global structure, further strengthening its Competition Law practice in Spain.
