Rain disrupts high school sports schedule; New Bern soccer game postponed
The rainy weather is causing disruptions in the high school sports schedule, with the women’s soccer playoffs facing postponements. New Bern’s game against D.H. Conley, originally scheduled for tonight, has been postponed. The teams will attempt to play again tomorrow, weather permitting.
Bears Head Coach Tim Guter announced his retirement at the end of his 30th season. Guter has led both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams to 29 conference titles. “It’s all about this time of year,” Guter said, referring to the postseason. The Bears lost both meetings to Conley this season, with scores of 4-0 and 1-0.
In other sports news, the Carolina Hurricanes are set for a crucial Game 4 tonight in Raleigh. The Hurricanes lead the series 2-1 after a significant home win on Saturday. The Washington Capitals will be playing desperately to avoid falling behind 3-1. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
Elsewhere, the Edmonton Oilers lead the Knights 2-1, with Game 4 taking place in Edmonton at 9:30 p.m.
The Panthers concluded their rookie mini-camp this weekend, providing Head Coach Dave Canales an opportunity to evaluate new draft picks and potential rookie free agents. The Panthers’ organized team activities begin on May 27, followed by a mandatory team mini-camp from June 10-12.
In motocross, Carteret County native Cooper Webb celebrated his third championship after finishing fourth in Salt Lake City, Utah. Webb’s family, including his wife, children, and parents, were present to witness his triumph. Webb, 29, will continue racing this summer as the outdoor season starts in a few weeks.
In NASCAR, Kyle Larson dominated in Kansas, winning all stages and securing his third victory of the season. Larson has now led 10,000 laps in his NASCAR career. The next event is the All-Star Race in North Wilkesboro on Sunday night.
