Rally to Stand Up for Science set Friday in Fort Collins – Loveland Reporter-Herald

Students, faculty and staff at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and residents of the region will rally in support of science and education and to voice concerns about recent executive orders that will negatively affect education, science, the environment and health care in the community at a Stand Up For Science at noon Friday.

The STEM Interdisciplinary Alliance (SIRA) and IndivisibleNOCO are organizing the effort to join hundreds of communities across the United States in rallies.

The rally will start at noon at the CSU Lory Student Center Plaza and will march to Old Town Fort Collins before returning to campus.

All members of CSU and residents of Fort Collins and the surrounding community are welcome.

The rally aims to raise awareness about executive policies that negatively affect education, science, climate and health care, and to demonstrate solidarity with national groups that believe that education is a fundamental right and that “Science is for Everyone,” according to a news release.

Organizers said STEM programs nationwide provide essential academic training and career advancement activities for diverse groups of students.

CSU receives over $50 million in federal grants to support STEM programs and research efforts on infectious disease, climate crisis and wildfire protection. Those funds create desirable jobs in Colorado communities and provide hands-on career training opportunities for hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and scientific staff.

The release said CSU and Fort Collins community members are concerned about how new executive orders cutting funding and agencies will affect the education and careers of local students and the economies of Northern Colorado and could put infectious disease research, climate crisis research, wildfire protection research and more in jeopardy.
