real id: REAL ID deadline is round the corner: Here is what US travellers need to know before boarding flight
American travellers have less than a week to prepare for a major change in airport security requirements. Beginning May 7, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be enforcing the long-delayed REAL ID regulations. These will require all passengers aged 18 and above to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved identification form to board domestic flights or access certain federal buildings. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. This Act is intended to strengthen national security by setting stricter standards for state-issued identification. However, its rollout has been repeatedly postponed. The most recent postponement of its enforcement happened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
How to check if you are REAL ID-ready
Travellers can easily check if their current ID is REAL ID-compliant by checking whether there is a star marking in the top right-hand corner of their identification. Depending on the state, this star could appear in different forms, stated a USA Today report. For example, in California state, the star is placed inside the outline of a bear in California; in some states it appears as a golden star.
For those persons who don’t have a REAL ID, they will have to visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in-person. Applicants must keep documents ready, verifying their full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two address proofs, and lawful residency.
Reportedly, some states allow pre-applications to be filled online, but the final step has to be completed in-person.

What happens if you miss the deadline?
If individuals fail to secure a REAL ID by the May 7 deadline, they can still fly domestically. However, the traveller has to carry alternative forms of identification, like a valid US passport, military ID, or a Department of Homeland Security-trusted traveller card. Without one of these alternatives, individuals will not be allowed through airport security.
Notably, that REAL ID requirement applies solely to air travel and certain federal facilities. However, one can still drive without a REAL ID.
Act now to avoid delays
REAL ID processing times are incredibly variable, and some states allegedly have a wait time as long as 45 days. As demand continues to soar leading up to the deadline, travellers are urged to act quickly to not create a last-minute crisis. The DHS website provides an effective map that links to every state’s DMV to aid with the application process.
