Winning a treble last term, Madrid is still on for a quadruple in 2024/2025. Though they lost the Spanish Super Cup to bitter rival FC Barcelona at the turn of the year, Los Blancos meet the Catalans in the Copa del Rey final on April 26 and are currently through to the UCL quarterfinals.

The Club World Cup is also on the horizon in the summer, and can bring with it a handsome pay packet not just for participation but also going far in the reimagined FIFA spectacle.

By the time that tournament comes around, Ancelotti will be on the brink of entering the last 12 months of his contract.

Madrid is performing well all things considered – with a wrath of injuries depleting the first team squad – but the Italian has faced constant speculation about his future as of late.

The March firing of Dorival Junior has seen him linked to the Brazilian national team manager’s post once more, and there is constant buzz about Xabi Alonso replacing him in the Bernabeu dugout.

Yet things should be clearer at a pre-planned meeting between the Champions League final on May 31 and the Club World Cup according to SPORT, which explains that lifting the former’s big-eared trophy is “the only thing that would guarantee” Ancelotti staying on in the Spanish capital – which even the coach is aware of.

Anything short of reaching the decider in Munich and securing a 16th UCL crown leaves his future “up in the air”, and a potential changing of the guard can’t be taken off the table.

Madrid’s president Florentino Perez and Ancelotti reportedly met on Friday last week, yet it was a sit-down held amid a “cordial atmosphere” where Perez supported and showed confidence in Ancelotti for what remains in the business end of the campaign.

Whatever happens moving forward, Ancelotti has already secured his legacy as one of the greatest ever tacticians to oversee Spain’s most successful club across two separate stints.
