Red Dwarf follows the misadventures of Dave Lister (Craig Charles), the last known human alive, who wakes up three million years in the future aboard a mining spaceship.

He is joined by a motley crew including a hologram of his former bunkmate Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), the evolved humanoid Cat (Danny John-Jules), and the well-meaning service mechanoid Kryten (Robert Llewellyn).

The series originally aired on BBC Two and later returned for additional seasons and specials between 2009 and 2020, totalling 12 seasons and a feature-length special, The Promised Land.

Beyond the small screen, Red Dwarf has inspired audiobooks, novels, and graphic novels.

This year, long-time co-creator Rob Grant died, with his final project, prequel novel Red Dwarf: Titan, alongside collaborator Andrew Marshall, released posthumously in July.

The book explores the early lives of Lister and Rimmer and sets the stage for the events of the series.

Mr Grant described the plot, saying the duo “get a message from the far future warning them that all realities are going to collapse unless they do something about it.”

Plans for a new TV special were cancelled in 2025, but Doug Naylor, who co-created the show with Mr Grant, has said he continues to write scripts set in the Red Dwarf universe.

The show remains available on BBC iPlayer.

TV show disappears from UK screens after 36 years

In other TV news, after 36 years on Sky One in the UK, The Simpsons is set to disappear from Sky screens.

The long-running animated series, which has had a 36-year partnership with Sky in the UK, will be dropped from the channel from November 1, marking the end of a decades-long broadcast tradition.

This change follows Sky’s loss of the rights to newer episodes, which have been available exclusively on Disney+ in the UK since 2023.

In December 2024, it was announced new episodes of The Simpsons would air exclusively on Disney+, followed by E4, although Sky continued to show classic episodes from earlier seasons.

Wesley Mead, a TV blogger, said: “Sky One’s repeats have continued in earnest throughout 2025 and 2026.”

They remained the only place to see seasons 34 and 35—the final two seasons to predate the E4 deal—on broadcast TV; they also retained rights to broadcast a number of classic seasons.

A spokesperson for Sky confirmed that from the end of October, Sky One will no longer feature previous series of The Simpsons in its schedule.

On October 31, Sky One will air a final Treehouse of Horror repeat at 6pm before the show is dropped from the schedule for two weeks.

Mr Mead said this was the first such break since the early 1990s.

Despite the loss, Sky customers with the Ultimate TV package will still be able to watch The Simpsons through Disney+.
