Regeneration Meghalaya: Youth drive art and action for the environment
Shillong, June 5: Marking World Environment Day 2025, the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with Earthtree Enviro Pvt. Ltd. and the Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) – Rural Tourism Council, hosted a vibrant student-led painting competition and tree plantation drive under the “Regeneration Meghalaya” initiative.
The event, aligned with this year’s global theme #BeatPlasticPollution, aimed to inspire environmental consciousness through creativity and action. Schools across Shillong and its neighbouring areas participated in the campaign, which blended artistic expression with tangible ecological contributions.
A total of 24 schools participated in the painting competition, grouped into three age-based categories. Each category included two environmental themes, and every school nominated two students per theme. The resulting artworks reflected a wide range of imaginative and thoughtful interpretations, highlighting the rising environmental awareness among Meghalaya’s youth.
Complementing the creative efforts, over 1,500 trees were planted by students at the LARITI Performing Centre. The plantation drive reinforced the initiative’s commitment to ecological restoration while offering students a hands-on experience in sustainability.

The Department of Arts and Culture played a pivotal role in conceptualising and supporting the initiative, underscoring the importance of fusing culture with civic and environmental education.
Earthtree Enviro Pvt. Ltd., known for its work in sustainability and land restoration, provided technical guidance, saplings, and thematic direction. The organisation also promoted eco-conscious practices, such as using root trainers instead of single-use plastic grow bags to propagate saplings.
“Let’s take the opportunity of World Environment Day to reflect on our environmental impact and take practical steps to create a positive change. At Earthtree, we are committed to restoring degraded landscapes by planting trees and creating green jobs that support a regenerative economy, “said Rishabh Khanna, CEO, Earthtree Enviro Pvt. Ltd.
The WICCI – Rural Tourism Council was instrumental in mobilising schools, coordinating volunteers, and managing on-ground logistics. Their involvement highlights the council’s focus on sustainable development within the rural tourism ecosystem.
“Sustainable tourism begins with informed choices—and no choice is more powerful than empowering young people to lead with knowledge and creativity,” said WICCI – Rural Tourism Council
The event concluded with spirited participation from students, educators, and organisers, all united in their dedication to Meghalaya’s regenerative journey. Through initiatives like these, Regeneration Meghalaya continues to nurture young environmental stewards and promote long-term sustainability in the state.
