SUV originally launched in 2012 sold more than 200,000 units in India and created B+ SUV segment in the market
Renault has announced the return of the Duster SUV to India, with the new model scheduled to be revealed on 26 January 2026. The original Duster, launched in India in 2012, sold more than 200,000 units locally and was the first SUV in what became the B+ SUV segment, which now accounts for almost one quarter of retail sales in the country.
The new Duster will be assembled at Renault’s Chennai plant, marking the activation of the brand’s fifth industrial hub outside Europe following facilities in Latin America, South Korea, Turkey and Morocco. The return forms part of Renault’s International Game Plan 2027, which aims to design, develop and build vehicles as closely as possible to their markets of sale in order to better address customer expectations.
“Renault Duster is more than just a name—it’s a true legend,” Stéphane Deblaise, Chief Executive of Renault India, said. “A symbol of adventure, reliability and innovation, its comeback shows our commitment to the Indian market and our desire to offer vehicles that meet the needs of our customers. New Renault Duster will rely on its iconic heritage while adopting a modern design, advanced technology and enhanced performance.”
India was the world’s fastest-growing car market in 2024, with 7% growth, and is currently the third largest market globally. Renault indicated the market has real potential for expansion of the brand. The Duster has sold nearly two million units in around 100 countries worldwide since its initial launch.
Sylvia dos Santos, Head of Naming Strategy at Renault’s Global Marketing Division, said: “We decided to capitalise on the name of Duster because it is a strong, iconic name that is part of the history of Renault India. Easy to pronounce and remember in any language, Duster is a brand saga name recognised around the world. Derived from the English word ‘dust’, it echoes the dust found on the roads it is capable of travelling on, evoking the vehicle’s robustness and adventurous character.”
Full details of the new model will be unveiled at the January 2026 reveal event in India. Renault did not disclose technical specifications, pricing or production volumes for the new Duster.
