Renault Renews Focus on Indian Car Production
French automaker Renault is accelerating its business growth in India with the appointment of a new CEO to cover the nation’s expanding vehicle market.
Seasoned Renault staffer Stéphane Deblaise will take the helm of Renault Group in India from Sept. 1, in an effort to drive an expansion in sales following the automaker’s acquisition of alliance-partner Nissan’s remaining 51% stake in alliance’s key vehicle production plant at Chennai.
The move works in tandem with the establishment of design center in Chennai, Renault’s largest design center outside of France, and the launch of the first of four planned Indian-built models: the new facelifted Renault Triber, a 7-seat people carrier.
Deblaise’s appointment aims to strengthen the company’s sales in India while also expanding its exports to other markets including Africa and Asia.
He most recently had been CEO of Renault’s operations in South Korea since 2022 and joined the French automaker in 2000 as advanced process engineer. His career included engineering roles at Renault’s several foreign strategic manufacturing hubs including in Latin America and China.
Since its launch in 2010, the Chennai plant has produced over 2.8 million vehicles, including 1.2 million exported to more than 100 countries, as well as 4.6 million engines and gearboxes.
Currently dedicated to the production of models underpinned by the automaker’s CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms, the facility is now preparing to host Renault’s new flexible, multi-energy modular platform, which will support the production of the brand’s future models.
“India is a key market for Renault Group,” says new group CEO François Provost. “With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India.”
